Summary
The Immigrant Learning Center, Inc. (ILC) of Malden, MA, is a not-for-profit organization that gives immigrants a voice in three ways:
- The English Language Program provides free, year-round ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes to help immigrant and refugee adults in Greater Boston become successful workers, parents and community members.
- The Public Education Institute informs Americans about immigrants and immigration in the United States.

The ILC celebrates 30 years of giving immigrants a voice.
English Language Program
The Immigrant Learning Center programs are designed to help immigrants and refugees become economically self-sufficient and socially and civically engaged. Classes are offered free of charge, year-round to students who range from those with little or no formal education to those with advanced degrees in their native languages.
The ILC staff determines the language needs and personal and educational goals of each student when they enroll. Students are placed into programs that best meet their individual needs, and counseling is provided to help them achieve their goals.
In addition to English skills, students gain leadership, problem solving, organizational and job skills. As students gain English proficiency, they achieve greater self-confidence, self-sufficiency, and the ability to contribute and participate in the community and workforce.
The ILC is currently holding most classes in-person while maintaining COVID-19 safety practices for the safety of our students, staff and community.

Because reading a report is not always enough, The ILC Public Education Institute produces several free webinars each year.
These online learning environments are an opportunity to interact with experts on hot topics and exchange ideas with peers.
The webinars are designed to respond to the issues of the day and broadly fall into topics around immigrant integration, education and research. The annual Immigrant Student Success workshop is held every July. Sign up here to be informed of the dates.
The Educator Resource Hub features more than 100 resources that The ILC has created and curated for teachers of immigrants and immigration. The Teaching U.S. Immigration series is a collection of free lesson plans on immigration throughout United States history that can be integrated into social studies curricula.
Immigrant Entrepreneurs
Immigrants positively impact the economy in many ways, perhaps none so obvious as the job creation and innovation of immigrant entrepreneurs.
The ILC Public Education Institute has made immigrant entrepreneurs a focus of our research and our outreach. In our Immigrant Entrepreneur hub, you can find:

The Institute for Immigration Research
The Institute for Immigration Research (IIR) is a multidisciplinary research institute at George Mason University. The IIR’s mission is to produce valid, reliable, and objective multidisciplinary research on immigrants and immigration to the United States and to disseminate this information through peer-reviewed academic journals, as well as in print and digital formats that make this research easily accessible to policy-makers, the media, the business community, and the general public.
IIR Director is James Witte.
Our faculty affiliates, graduate students, and partners are at the forefront of immigration research. The IIR produces high quality, timely research and analysis that examines the economic contributions of all immigrants in the United States, with a particular emphasis on immigrant entrepreneurs with high levels of education and skills.
The IIR is a joint venture between George Mason University and The Immigrant Learning Center, Inc. (ILC) of Massachusetts. The IIR was founded in 2012 through the generous donation of Ms. Diane Portnoy, educator and philanthropist from Malden, Massachusetts.
The IIR is located on the campus of George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, outside the nation’s capital, Washington, DC. Its strategic location allows the IIR to draw on unparalleled academic, government, and private resources to advance its mission in research, education, and professional opportunities for current and future scholars of immigration studies. Through conferences, workshops, lectures, and other events, the IIR is able to engage in community outreach with one of the most diverse populations in the United States.
